Why written language is difficult and ways to support early skills

This session offers a foundational scientific understanding of the history of reading and why it presents challenges in relation to oral language. Connie will explain how oral language development supports early reading skills and provide practical strategies and real-life examples that nannies can apply with children to support literacy development.
Connie Masters of Pierson, Michigan, is a seasoned nanny with a background in elementary education and a lifetime of caregiving. With a strong emphasis on pre-reading foundations. She is dedicated to helping others understand the importance of pivotal skills and providing resources to empower caregivers during this crucial period. After receiving her Bachelor’s of Science in Education at Malone University, she has gained experience as the center director of Sylvan Learning Centers in Niles, MI, ten years working as an educator in fifth grade English language arts, Kindergarten, and substitute teaching; and most recently nannying for several families in Western Michigan. Additionally, she brings the experience of raising her two daughters and her personal familiarity with being a parent. Outside of her work, Connie enjoys crafting projects, a good novel, and spending time with her husband, Robert, of thirty years.
